Historie of Terneuzen In the 12 senctiory Terneuzen was called Ter Nose and was first mentioned in the archieves in 1325 . From Terneuzen there was the so called "Gentse Vaart" in the direction of Ghent. With the Pacification of Ghent, the city became in the hands of the "Staten". The current Terneuzense Market was the port. Already in 1460, the port of Terneuzen was mentioned. In this harbour, goods to be transported ,were shipped in a barge and pull in the direction of Ghent . This "Gentse Vaart" remained in use until 1583, in this year it was closed for the construction of the fortress Terneuzen. In 1491, the small village was fortified. Possibly because of its strategic position on the trip to Ghent. In 1827, the Ghent-Channel Terneuzen became operational. In Terneuzen came two locks. With the advent of this channel the Terneuzen grown to great size Tradingcity. (citaat: www.terneuzen.nl) In 1962 the Terneuzen watersportcentre "Neusen" was born. (Quote from the association) |
